When Shadows Fall

Is there anything quite like the feeling of finally getting your hands on the new instalment of a series you love? The excitement of a story whose twists and turns will take you by surprise, but couched in the comfort of characters you know as intimately as old friends, affectionately acknowledging their personal quirks and foibles as they crop up in the story.

The new Alex Gray novel is the perfect example of this. It sees the return of the much loved DSI William Lorimer and his Scottish police team as they set out to investigate a brand new case. Except this one is unlike any they’ve ever seen.

I think this could be Alex Gray’s best novel yet. Good news if, like me you’re a die-hard fan. But also if you haven’t read her before, this is a superb place to start. One of the great things about the DSI William Lorimer series is that they all work as standalones. You don’t need to have read any of the others to understand what’s going on (though you may find yourself going back and gobbling up the backlist once you’ve started!)
