CJ Lyons – How I Met My Detective

I first met FBI Agent Caitlyn Tierney while writing BLIND FAITH, a story I thought she would play a minor role in.

Should have known better. Caitlyn doesn’t follow the rules – not even mine.

The first scene I wrote with her, she was in her office at the FBI Academy at Quantico, fighting a severe migraine secondary to a traumatic brain injury that she suffered while on a case.

That pretty much sums up Caitlyn: she’s going to get the job done, no matter what. Throw her out a window, give her emergency brain surgery, post-op rehab, severe migraines . . . it’s all in a day’s work. Once she’s committed to a case – or a cause – she will not give up.

As I wrote her, I didn’t think about all the tough-guy thriller characters out there. Men who get stabbed, slugged, shot, concussed, and still have enough stamina to knock out the bad guys and have sex with the pretty girl.

No. Instead, I remembered the real life women I’d met while working in the ER and what I’d seen them endure.

A colleague who had spinal meningitis (one of the most painful and debilitating diseases imaginable) and yet she kept working, wheeling an IV pump with her as she saw patients in our overwhelmed, understaffed ER until someone could relieve her.

A twelve-year-old girl, battered and bleeding, who insisted on talking to the cops so they could find and arrest the men who assaulted her before they went after her little sister like they’d threatened.

Too many mothers to count who, after a car crash, demanded I take care of their children before them, triage rules be damned.

That’s the kind of toughness Caitlyn has. Mental, physical, emotional stamina that allows her to face the worst nightmares imaginable.

Of course she’s afraid – she’s only human. But she’ll never, ever surrender to those fears. Even if it means breaking all the rules and risking her job . . . or her life.

That makes her difficult to live with – sometimes even to like – but she’s the first person you’d call if you ever needed someone to fight for you or your loved ones. Because you can trust her to get the job done.
